Lithuanian back with awards from the world mowing championship in Poland

This weekend, with a large team of Lithuanian scythe mowers and their cheerleaders, we participated in the World Scythe Mowing Competition in the Biebrza National Park, which took place for the 18th time.

It was good to compete with incredibly strong Polish and Belgian mowers, to see how such a championship is organised in other countries, and to chat with like-minded people. The championship is also traditionally held here in the aquatic warbler habitat.

We travelled with:

  • Undefeated Lithuanian champions “Scythe Brothers” Kozmas Auškalniu and Arūnas Kakta from Šilutė district, Gardamas eldership;
  • Stubborn Samogitians “Kresnižoliai” Sigitas Savickis and Irmantas Pryšmantas from Kretingalė;
  • “Švendubrėnai” Tadas Suraučis and Antanas Smaliukas, who charm everyone with their exceptional image and humour;
  • Vaiva Savickė from Kretingala and Vytautas Povilauskas from Švendubrėnai were also part of the team during the event;
  • Žymantas Morkvėnas, a representative of our organisation, also tried his hand at the special event.

Although we didn’t win the World Scythe Mower title, we climbed the stage 3 times, and all the participants remarked on the exceptional quality of mowing by all the Lithuanian teams!

  • Vaiva Savickė, who unexpectedly decided to take part in the competition, performed the best. She won the title of Best Mower in the womens category. She succeeded thanks to her quality of mowing;
  • the special National Park nomination of first place went to “Švendubrėnai”, unexpectedly beating out the “Scythe Brothers”, who came second in the same category.

We thank Biebrzański Park Narodowy for its warm welcome, care, attention, the long tradition of scything, and for the care of the aquatic warblers! And of course, we bow down to the ground to the wonderful Lithuanian hay mowers!

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Lithuanian Scythe Mowing Championship at the Nemunas delta next year. As we have seen, we are definitely not inferior to the long-established championship in Biebrza!
